Female Sterilisation

Are there any females out there who are childfree by choice and have had a sterilisation by choice, and did you manage to get it on the NHS, or did you have to go private? I am 100% sure on my decision to do this but don't know whether to even bother trying my GP or just go straight to a private clinic. Cheers in advance.

A girl who used to work with me some years ago, was adamant she did not want any children of her own & was sterilised on the NHS. As far as I know she didn't regret it. I would have a word with your GP before looking privately, as he may be able to assist you. Of course your GP's decision depends your age & circumstances. Good luck nicola.

I knew someone years ago who had it done on the nhs. It took her a while to convince her gp that she was not acting on the rebound after her husband's death. In fact, she had made up her mind long before her husband became ill, but had not acted on it because her husband did not want her to. After her husband's death she went to her gp with a sense of relief but was told (patronizingly) that she was only acting on the rebound. However, she persisted, and after a while (not sure how long) she managed to convince him. At least this is the story she told me. So I think you should try your gp, and be prepared to be patient but persistent.

sterilisation by choice is free on the NHS but if you've never had kids or are a young woman then be prepared for some questioning from your GP who may need convincing. Private care they just ask how you wish to pay.

Your GP will refer you to a gynaecologist for discussion and you can expect a routine appointment (between 8 and 17 weeks depending on where you live). They are reluctant to do it if you are under 30 even if you have kids. Its a big decision to make and there are other ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

I understand it's a big decision, but it's not one I have taken lightly. It comes from literally years of careful consideration and research. Please rest assured I wouldn't ask the question - and wouldn't be considered spending �700 on a private op - if I hadn't considered all my other options.
