Since the college is preseumably named after the biblical figure, how did 'Magdalen' become pronounced as 'Maudlin' yet the Biblical character's name is pronounced properly? I would have thought that if the pronounciation of one altered, so would they both!

Mary Magdalen is prounounced "Magdalana".
Magdelene Street in Cambridge is 'maudlin', while Magdalen Street in Norwich is 'mag-da-len'. Not strictly relevant, but I just thought I'd share!
