What does cause pip in poultry?

This has presumably been prompted by Mr Memory in above film. Pip is caused by the fowl breathing through its mouth (beak) as a result of a respiratory disease, such as catarrh, roup or diphtheria. It results in a white scale forming on the tip of the tongue.
