I suspect this has been debated already but is it Monet or Manet? Cambridge Biographical Dictionary leads you to believe that Manet is the founder of the Impressionist movement but I would have thought Monet was the 'unswerving advocate'. Any thoughts? BB

The Houghton Mifflin Dictionary of Cultural Literacy says Manet was "A nineteenth-century French painter, one of the originators of Impressionism".
The Hutchinson Encyclopedia says Manet was a "leading Impressionist"
While Monet may be the front runner, I don't think we can exclude Manet. Therefore at the end of the day, only Kate knows the correct answer!

To settle this once and for all, check website http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/monet/ The wording leaves no doubt. Nice website too.
The initiator unswerving advocate
Exhibited in 1863 at the Salon des Refuss, his Le Djeuner sur l'herbe ("Luncheon on the Grass") aroused the hostility of the critics and the enthusiasm of a group of young painters who later formed the nucleus of the Impressionists.
