I an looking into my family history, I have a grt grt grandad born in Mary le bone, London 1846. He later stayed with his brother at 65 Copenhagen Street in 1871, does anyone know if this address is still there, or would it have been bombed in the blitz? He went on to live in the Greenwich area and had a son baptized at St Pauls Deptford. He then went on to live in Brighton where he died of TB, he was a Jeweller and he opened a shop in Brighton. I do not know London very well so any bits of info would be useful. His brother was an Oil and Colourman as was their father. He married a Cheshire girl, so he must have travelled up North at some point but went straight back down South after their marriage. Anything anyone knows would be appreciated.
According to my London street atlas there is a Copenhagen Street in King's Cross. It runs from York Way in the west to Islington in the east. I can't check it for you personally, unless you pay my air fare from Oz.
Thicko is right - there is indeed a Copenhagen Street near Kings Cross. I used to frequent a pub (George IV) there many years ago. Keep in mind though that there may have been more than one Copenhagen Street in London (but if you've got this off the census you should be able to tell if it is the right one by the area), some streets have been renamed during the years. Also if it is the right Copenhagen Street it could well have been renumbered in the past 140 odd years. Islington Council may be able to help you.
my ex husbands Great uncle was born in 1905 at 67 Copenhagen Place, Limehouse in the distrct of Stepney. It certainly was bombed in the second world war.
Thank you all for your answers, it has given me something to go on, and I think I write to Islington Council and see if they can tell me anything. I have not been to London so your help was appreciated. Have a good weekend.
