I set up a direct debit with Barclaycard about 18 months ago and specifically stated that it was to go out on 23rd of each month as im not paid til 21st. Anyway last month I noticed it had gone out on 19th and I was charged 30.00 by my bank for this so I rang Barclaycard and was told that it always goes out on different dates every month as the payment due date varies, I checked my statements for the past 18 months and on 9 occassions it has gone out early & I have been charged (should check my statements more, I know). Anyway this cant be right can it? Surely Im not the only one that has to have DD's go out on a specific date? They said they dont work like that and its tough basically.

If your Barclaycard statement is provided to you more than 10 days before the payment date then the situation you describe is within the rules of the Direct Debit Scheme.

The Direct Debit Guarantee is operated by all banks and building societies that take part in the Direct Debit Scheme. The efficiency and security of the Scheme is monitored and protected by your own bank or building society.

If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change, the organisation will notify you normally 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.

If an error is made by the organisation or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.

Many credit card companies will allow you to change your statement date as long as you don't do it too often. I don't know if Barclaycard is one of them but if they are it would be an idea to move the date a little later in the month - say by a week to allow a margin of error.

DDs go out on or shortly after the specified date. In the case of a credit card this will be the date specified in each statement, NOT the same date each month.

So Barclaycard are unfortunately in the right. Maybe they could have been more informative when you set the DD up, maybe the numpty who set it up didn't know his own system very well and fell into the same trap as you..
Even though they may be right their charges are illegal & you can claim them back. I have just received part of my charges back & used the templates from moneysavingexpert.co.uk. It tells you exactly what to do & is very painless with great results. I know this doesn't help with the DD dates but it may be some compensation for you.
Good luck
