timing tensioner

how do you tension a timingbelt tensioner on a sharan/galaxy,. the self adjusting type. have followed instructions but it is not self tensioning. do I need a tool? or what?

if you have the pd engine from vw where there is an oil filled piston that opperates the tensioner there is a complicated set up procedure you will also need the special tools for the crank shaft cam shaft and tensioner..as the cambelt tension is set up with all pulleys locked off the piston should be changed with the tensioner a genuin one will come with the special tool for the tensioning...
