sharan cutting out problem

i have a vw sharan which cuts out intermitently, it could do it after a mile or 100 miles and also may not start, there appears to be a spark, and i can smell petrol, does anyone have any ideas of what this could be, could it be the immobiliser ? or ecu ?

first i would check the earth straps on engine and chasis for corrosion , also get rac cover min solution 3 and then get it booked in to the dealer to get the ecu checked for errors
