tom cat been fighting?

My tom cat 'Stan' has been fighting has come home beaten up. He has a limp and sort of a cat black eye.... swollen with visible stratches. He is eating well and still very affectionate but I'm worried he may be in pain from his scrap with the 'local lads' Stan still has his balls and I believe this is what the fighting is all about , he has had pretty bad fighting injuries before. It cost me �120 at the vets last time because it was the weekend, they just gave him 'cat pain killers' and an antibiotic injection and 5 tablets! Does anyone know if I could give Stan a pain killer for babies, just to tide him over the weekend as the weekend rate for the vet is shocking. All advice would be very welcome as my wife adores Stan and wants to whisk him off to the vet immediately, regardless of the dent to the bank account. I'm pretty sure he just needs pain relief and not admission to intensive care that my wife thinks he needs.

oh, please get stan castrated,you will be getting vet bills all the time if you leave things as they are.i would say visit the vets again ,infection is the main worry with cat fights and what ever you do ...........do not give aspirin to cats. hope he goes on ok

I'd echo garner. Please get him neutered. If you don't he will be constantly getting in to fights costing you money in vets bills and next time he might not be so lucky - he could end up so badly injured he has to be put down.

In addition the fact that he is not neutered means he will inevitably be fathering numerous litters of kittens who will just end up joining all the others in the world that are unwanted and/or feral.

In addition to the above answers, cats often get abscesses from fighting and these can be very painful.

If you think he has a wound that's going to get infected, best get him to the vet - I saw a wound in a terrier over the summer that the owner had left for three days before taking to the vet - we drained 2 litres (yes, litres) of pus and fluid from it.

DO NOT give your cat human painkillers - paracetamol and ibuprofen are highly poisonous to cats, and they are also very susceptible to aspirin poisoning.

Animal painkillers may be required if he is in pain, and antibiotics to stop an abscess forming. You should take him to the vet. If you are still not sure, phone your vet and ask for advice.

I can only agree with all of this. Minor wounds can be kept clean but can so easily form into an abscess which is very distressing for the cat and can cause all sorts of problems. Whatever you do don't give him "human" painkillers - they can be poison to a cat. Please get him neutered - he'll be much better off.

Hi everyone,
Many thanks for all the advice.
I just wanted to let you know how Stan is doing. My wife decided to get Stan to vet that day, despite my concerns over the cost!
The vet gave Stan two injections.. that was the Friday evening, he was back on Monday morning where the vet took away Stan's manhood!! oh and put an identity chip in his neck.
He was back at home later that day non the worse for losing his 'Bits' My wife was told to keep him in for 2-3 days and give him a small bland meals. After being home for ten minutes Stan demolished half a tin of cat food. After sleeping for an hour he got out of the bedroom window onto the conservatory roof where he jumped into the garden and off into freedom. He came back after three hours and ate a full tin of cat food, needless to say he's in perfect health and my wife still has him draped round her neck, purring away every time she sits down.
As I typed the original plee for advice she was putting him into the cat box to take him to the vet so she was pleased when she read the posts from everyone and now has the moral high ground regarding cat health!!
