does anyone know how to clean one of the old bread carving boards properly. I have put it in a dishwasher but feel it needs other cleaning than the machine.
many thanks.

There used to be a cleaning cream called "Jif" for this sort of thing, but the name was changed to "Cif", apparently because some continentals couldn't pronounce the letter "J". I'm not sure whether this is still in the shops, but my wife uses Sainsbury's own equivalent, which is called
"Sainsbury's Lemon Cream Cleaner" to clean her chopping boards. I imagine it would work equally well on a bread board. You have to give it a good scrub with one of those wire contraptions used in the kitchen.
Give it a good scrub with a brush. ( nail Brush if you have nothing else, then stand in the fresh air to dry.
I assume you mean a wooden board. If so, I would not recommend the dishwasher as it will warp. I wouldn't use Cif or any other chemical either because it will pick up the smell. If you only use it for cutting bread on, why do you think it needs such deep-clean treatment?
Dried-up breadcrumbs aren't really a problem when it comes to generating bacteria, as long as the board is kept in a dry place. A good scrub from time to time with a nailbrush and ordinary washing up liquid will be quite sufficient.
just hot soapy water plus a scrubbing brush and elbow grease- wouldn't recommend chemical cleaners, they would taint food.
Hubby has just piped up and said you could sand it down if badly soiled, if it's unvarnished.
pour about a tablespoon of salt, add another of water into a paste and then hand scrub the board (or use a nail brush) - this acts a natural cleaner, if i'm right in thinking, this is how butchers used to clean their butchers blocks years ago.
