I have been in msconig to turn off some of my start up items. When I restart my machine I get a black screen with the following writing, just before windows loads: -

"please select the operating system to start:

WIndows XP Home Edition
Windows Recovery COnsole"

After about 2 seconds it just loads windows normally as usual. I never used to get this screen/prompt. Any ideas how I get it back as I used to have it...windows loading normally without a prompt?

HELP!!!

You must have already had a multiboot configuration set up on your machine with a timeout set at 0 (zero) secs. but which is now set at 2 secs.

You could reset the timeout to 0 in the BOOT.INI tab of MSCONFIG (be careful - messing up boot.ini could lead to a whole lot of heartache), or leave it as it is which ensures easy access to the Recovery Console if XP was ever to play up.
That makes me laugh. The answer that gives a full explanation and a way to "fix" it only gets 2 stars.
