Exciting Day at Work!!!!

I work in a busy City, by the sea, not much wildlife, apart for seagulls and pigions. So imagine my excitement today, when from my office window, I saw a Harris Hawk, sitting on top of a shogun!!! I immediatly went down to see what was going on, It was a guy who had been asked to come in to deter the pigions from nesting in the old buildings on the harbour side. He also had a peregrin with him. I got to stroke and hold the Harris hawk, and promptly fell in love. I stroked the peregrin but did'nt hold him.

So my question is can anyone beat that on a booring Tuesday?

Hi horseache, I dont think I can top your exiting day, as the Harris hawk is truely a beautiful bird and one of my favourites but I did have a bit of exitement when I saw a bird I had'nt seen in many years, I walked into a small copse of oak trees in a meadow and saw a ( if the auto censor allows) a woodcock fly out from benieth my feet, it had been totaly camauflaged in the leaf litter and I think it only broke cover because it thought I was about to step on it !
They say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, in this case it was true. Regards Tbird+

I certainly couldn't beat that at any day at work, a truly wonderful and once in a lifetime experience.

Unfortunately, driving trains, we sometimes hit birds, a pigeon about twice a week (slow to react), once a goose, and once a heron, not nice, although I did halt services once to rescue an injured pigeon

I agree with Tbird, the Harris Hawk has to be the most beautiful of all the raptors.

Something in the garden made me smile this morning. I heard a tap, tap, tap coming from the garden next door sounding exactly like a woodpecker. The drumming continued and as I peered through the hedge I saw my 'woodie' was actually a Great Tit examining an old nest box with all his might. Oh well.

I also thought you said shotgun, but what I really want to know is who did you fall in love with - the Harris Hawk or the guy who brought him?

Best I can offer is two 'mad' March hares running up the middle of the road, then stopping to have a boxing match before 'haring' across the field.

I'm so glad I'm not the only fool to get excited about a bird, and yes Lankeela, it was the bird.

I agree with all your posts the Harris Hawk is so beautiful, I've never seen one before. Life is so mad I live in the middle of the country side yet see a fantastic bird in the city (maybe I should re-word that). Even if it's not native to Britain, you still dont expect to see a bird of prey in a City.

It did make me laugh when I asked the guy if he had had him long............. "yes since he was an egg" was the reply.

Did you see on the news this morning a family had bought half a dozen duck eggs from Waitrose eaten half of them and then the little girl in the family asked mummy and daddy could she put t2 of the eggs in the incubator they had. They didn't like to upset her so they said sure you try.

Some time later the eggs hatched and the girl had fuffy ducklings. - she realy pulled the rabbit out of the hat there didn't she...unbelievable!

Great what you saw, the best I,ve seen was a doe and her faun drinking. It happened about 4yrs ago when max ny gsd was about a year old.I walk him round an old pit tip and several people mentioned the deer but I thought the were joking , then early one morning I was watching the ducks and there they were, just walking down to the pond about 50yds away. I sat and watched them for about 5mis then something spooked them and off they shot. I now carry my camera but, wouldnt you know it, in 4yrs I've never seen anything like it again.
