Are all cables connecting laptops & small speakers standard? I left mine at home & am now at college & music-less

On all the laptops I've seen you normally have a 2 x 3.5mm stereo socket (like the ones you have for headphones) one is for your headphones, the other a microphone. All small speakers come with a 3.5mm jack, but you may want to check if you are buying some. If you plug the speakers into the headphone socket on the laptop the speakers will work just fine.
Also to note, I used a 5.1 surround sound set of speakers off my laptop using a 3 female to 1 male 3.5 mm splitter, which basically means you can plug the 3 jacks you have for surround sound (rear, front and centre speakers) into this splitter / adaptor so you can plug directly into one socket. I bought my splitter from the US here's a link for the type of thing i was talking about
