Is undertaking still illegal in this country.

I drive on the motoway alot and I see this happen everyday. They go into lane 1, undertake me and then try and get into my lane, cutting me up if they want.

Anything that can be done? I asume report to the police who then will not do anything.

Yes Compostella, on Xmas Eve you are driving with your car loaded up with presents, which I delivered in my HGV. Unfortunately you can't have your cake and eat it.
Well answered, Compo and Sig, and I think The Trog has put it in a nutshell. THE CENTRE AND OUTSIDE LANES ARE FOR OVERTAKING ONLY. Also, no-one should impose themselves on other people's driving by saying 'I'm doing the legal maximum in the middle lane, therefore I am not moving over.'

Wow this has gone on for a while!

Ok, i'm in lane 2 because I know around a mile in front of me lane 1 will crawl to around 50mph because they will be coming off the motorway up the busy sliproad.

So yes i'm in lane 2, I don't want to move into lane 3 as I like it at 70mph and don't really see the need to hit around 90mph!!

So i'm in lane 2 and there's somebody overtaking me, granted not at light speed as usual but at around 75mph.

But of course, 75 isn't fast enough for these small minded people so rather than sit and overtake me in lane 3 they see a bit of a clear view in lane 1! So off they go in lane 1, undertaking, until they see traffic ahead. At that point he now wants to come into my lane or have the red face of slowing down and getting knowhere, heaven forbid. So he barges his way into the gap in front of me, which I believe is around a car or two lenghts to allow for stopping distances (which by the way are nothing to these drivers).

So I have to slow down for this dick! as so does the person behind me and the person behind me etc etc etc. And we wonder why sometimes there are phantom traffic james.

Sorry mate, the way you explain it, you should have been in lane 1.

I think my question was actually.......

Is it Illegal to undertake?
So most of the respondents here are more concerned with udder's (possibly) incorrect usage of the middle lane than the far more common offense of speeding. I wonder how many people are killed by someone driving unecessarily in the middle lane compared to those that are killed by drivers who are going too fast.

Compostella - who exactly do you worry about having the vote? People who believe that it is important to stick to all the rules of the road, and not just those that suit them, or just anyone who disagrees with you?
Neither

Just people with lack of awareness throughout life.

Off out tonight are you? Thought not.
Just people with lack of awareness throughout life.

You mean that if a lot of people are doing something (speeding), then it's OK? Apparently "a lot" of people are hogging the middle lane - why is one acceptable while the other isn't?

I'm not sure about your obsession with my social calendar; either you equate going out a lot with an understanding of the human condition, which would surely make Jade Goody and Paris Hilton two of the world's greatest thinkers, or - well, I'm flattered, but I'd never dream of cheating on Mme LeMarchand.
the trog is right even on motorways, the rule of the road is drive on the left except when overtaking that includes motorways.( ex driving insructor )
The references to your social calendar is used to illustrate that I don't think that you are good company and that you do not receive many invites t spend time with other people.

You've got me at it now, speaking like Mr Logic (Its a character in a funny comic called Viz)
