Childrens tv prog.

Does any one remember the title of a childrens tv show from the late 70's,it was the story of a boy (orphaned i think) growing up in a gold prospectors town, not sure if it was set in the US or Australia.Cant remember much else.But its one of those long forgoten things that comes into my mind once in a while.
