hi im am using pea pods site as i am her daughter visiting at the mo. i have been a prison officer for 12yrs and absolutely love it.i work in a top security male prison,i wouldnt work with women inmates as i have worked in clothing factories and that was bad enough! anyway i wouldnt do anything else,i am 36 now and found my niche. it is challenging work and you have to be able to stand up for yourself and take the rough with the smooth.there is a great sense of cameraderie amongst the staff as we are like a huge family. you tend to work with the same people every day so get to bond with each other. it can be hair raising sometimes depending on what category prison you work in,ie if you work with young offenders they tend to cause more problems to staff than old timers that have done years. it is definetely not a job for the faint hearted! saying that i consider myself to have grown in confidence since i joined, you just have to know how to deal with people. we get training in control and restraint techniques and always work as a team when dealing with an aggressive inmate.its just like being in the police but our shifts are better and we are inside, plus you know what you are dealing with and their capabilities.hope this helps.
