Bipolar or moody?

Anyone have experience of bipolar disorder/manic depression? How does manic depression look different from someone who has mood swings? Any anecdotes please? have web searched but would appreciate some personal views - help very very very much appreciated.

Stange that you posted this question as my daughters freind (male) has bi-polar depresssion and she has just rushed to hospital as he took an overdose last night.

He has really black days when he just cant cope but to meet him you would think he was the happiest man around. I always thought he was just 'too happy' and almost on the edge. Am sad - he is a lovely lad.

stephen fry made a great documentary about his life with manic depression, in fact repeated only last week. its very interesting and if possible try and get a look at it if you can,
