How would i go about spillting the internet signal from a single modem into 2 computers?

before anyone says "buy a router" my problem is this...my mother bless her has that a router will "destroy the family" so i need a alternative arrangement ( would i be able to split it with USB hubs?).

I'm not too bothered if the speed is halved etc

and i'm wanting a technical answer please...not advice on family relationships

Many thanks in advance

"destroy the family"?? a router is just a fancy hub!

you need a router.
Most routers come with a built-in modem anyway. Just tell her its only a new modem.
Connect the two computers together and set up a network so that the second computer accesses the internet through the first one.
If you have xp running on both you can run the 'setting up a network' wizard..

Just out of interest, why does your mum believe a router will "destoy the family" ?? Maybe if you explain to her exactly what it is, she'll be more open to the concept !
