I've moved home three times and have accumulated a mass of documents to do with things like Council Tax, rates, income tax, telephone, electricity etc. Please does anyone know of guidance as to how long official personal papers should be kept? A bonfire is a very tempting idea.

With your old homes, I would just keep the last bill you have from each company for each property for 3 years.

Assuming everything is paid and in order.

This will give you all the information you need - account numbers and so on.

Income tax - P60 for at least 5 years.

Thank you Ethel. The 3 year and 5 year periods are interesting. Many of my docs. go back to the 1990's
