is london a city?

today people were telling me that london isn't a city... they said it was a borough, and i said it wasn't as it was made of 32 boroughs. and then someone said it was a county - why would they say this? and then i said what about the 'city of london'. why don't they think london's a city? just because it's so much bigger than all the other's in the uk...

Of course it is, though technically the city part is very small - as you said, city of London, which is only a few square miles.

oh yeah but london is really a village !
I dont't know if this is real but i used to know an old cockney, pearly king who said that the city is the central square mile, you had to be born within the sound of bow bells to be a cockney and the rest of london was a town as in his favourite song
"maybe it's because i'm a londoner that i love london town"
