The writer of the original story (Dalton Trumbo, died 1976) and screenwriter John Dighton (died 1989) passed on without revealing what he knew either. Two poems are quoted in the film which have been identified as Time-Tested Beauty Tips by Sam Levenson and Arethusa by Shelley.
