Can you buy sedatives for dogs to calm them down? (just for a short while. Not for long and not more than once or twice) Can I get them from the pet shop or do I have to go to the vet?

You can buy herbal things from pet shops, but you really need to find a better solution.

I would be very reluctant to use a sedative on any animal - the most common one the vets prescribe is ACP but it can be very dangerous if not used in the correct dose as prescribed for that particular animal.
Try something homeopathic like rescue remedy. Best way of calming down a dog is more exercise.

When Max my GSD first had to go into kennels he would not settle at all and the owner of the kennels suggested that the next time he went in I saw the vet and got some APC ( I think). When next he went to the kennels and started to play up they gave him a tablet at night and one in the morning and that was all he needed. That was 5yrs ago and he has never been any problem since.
as snappy says it could be the diet, is it very high in protein - and more exercise would help. I got some stuff called 'show off' from http://www.fitandfertile.com/products.htm
which works wonders with my one bitch when I take her to dog shows - never hear a peep out of her, and she never sits still normally.
