Insurance for first car

Is there a website I can go to to get an idea of how much it would cost to insure a car without having to give in loads of personal details - I want to compare a few cars as knowing the insurance cost might change my mind about which care to buy! Im 27, a woman and althought I passed my test when I was 17 this will be the first car I have actually owned so I will be starting without any no claims bonuses etc. It will just be me driving the car and it will be a new car. Any recommendations for companies to go to?

Screentrade are quite good - I found them through moneysupermarket.com. I was 24 when i got my first car and the premium was very reasonable!

I've never found one where they didn't wan't to know all the ins and outs of a.... Confused.com though will search loads of companies and you only have to enter your details once.

What you really need to know is which insurance groups the cars, which you might be considering, fall into. (Although insurers aren't obliged to follow the 'group system, they almost always do so. i.e. a car in a low insurance group will nearly always have a lower premium than a car in a higher group).

There's an excellent website where you can simply input the make and model of the car to find out which group it falls into. Even better, it also allows you to select a group and see all of the cars in that group:

There are plenty of brokers who will claim that they search all available policies and can get you the cheapest deal. Don't believe them! Try phoning local brokers to see if they can beat the 'big boys'. For example, when I bought my first car, the AA told me that they'd checked lots of policies and could offer me the cheapest deal. I phoned a local firm and they offered a figure which was nearly 40% cheaper!

get an idea of models of cars you like the look of first though.
If you have a partner or husband at same address as you who has a clean licence and is older then it can sometimes be beneficial to add them to your policy and bring the quote down. of course it depends if you want them insured.

Not being a bird, I have never used them but Sheilas Wheels are for the fairer sex only. Apparently, you are safer drivers than us men so premiums are lower.

I do not wish to question your finances, but are you sure you want a new car? The soon as you drive it off the forecourt you kiss goodbye to about a 1/5th of its value straightaway.
