Following that, the dog usually attempts to lick the area. You can spend several dollars (or pounds) to take the pet to the vet or you can find out how to do the job yourself. The best advice for preventing the condition has already been expressed (no pun intended) ... lots of fibre...
If the dog is showing a lot of interest in its rear end or as said above scooting its bum on the floor then they may need emptying. You CAN do it yourself, but to be honest, it is probably the worst possible job associated with dogs! The smell is foul and if you squeeze at the wrong angle you can get an eyeful and believe me it is not pleasant! Worth every penny of the vets consultation fee. Some groomers will also do it.
Actually very few dogs need it done for them but if it needs doing regularly they can be removed.
