My oilstone has been left uncovered in the garage for the last few months. It has now has a crystaline growth on the side which was uppermost. Can anyone explain what this growth is?

Probably crystals of whatever additive was present in the oil you last used.
Sure it's crystals? I ask because believe it or not, there are bacteria that actually eat oil, and this will result in a white deposit.
