Of course,it depends on how David Cameron's Tories are in the opinion polls - if they are surging ahead,I doubt it would be wise to go to the country.
Personally,I would like a General Election called right now,and get the British people to boot out this phoney PM - Tony Bliar.

If we are taking bets, I'm going for October 2008.
They would want 4 years but 2009 is European election years which Brown would prefer to avoid.
Installed as Leader this summer, celebrates 1 year anniversary of his promotion at Conference in 2008 by calling a snap election, catching the (still policy-less) Tories on the hoof and effectively cancelling the Conservative conference the following week.
