I would like to plant geraniums in window boxes on a south facing window. However in the summer the boxes are mostly in the shade of an overhanging balcony. Only in winter is there full sun. Is this a suitable location for geraniums or can you reccomend a substitute.

Hi chrisdan, Your right to be cautious, most geraniums do best in sun or at least part-shade, but why not try some Ivy leaved geraniums that should accept shade better ?
Maybe interplant with some buizzy lizies ?

As Thunderbird says you need full sun for geraniums and I'd add for the ivy-leafed varieties too (pelagoniums) for them to really flower at their best. Try begonias pendula for shade, they need putting into window boxes now and flower until the frosts, then you put the corms away until next year. They come in reds, yellows and orange and also in pastel.
