Hi, i have a 1 year old jack russell, the problem is whenever i leave him he will chew the wallpaper from my walls, he also chews the kids toys if he is left for even 5 minutes. He is only left alone for 5 hours on a saturday and 4 on a sunday, while i go to work. I hate having to put him in a cage while i am out. I was thinking about putting a muzzle on him while i was out but dont think is too safe would like to know if anybody has any suggestions on how to stop this chewing. Thanks
Have you tried giving her a hide chew while your out? Mine doesnt chew , she just nicks anything she can so i put everything out of her reach when i go out ,she nicks just about everything that isnt nailed down :-)i should have called her Nick &Run,she is deaf so should doesnt hear the other names i call her :-)
Hi thanks for replying, i have given him a bone while im out but he just isnt interested, he only likes to chew a bone in the garden!! and mine likes to pinch things too, its ok when im around i think hes so cute when he runs around all playful its just i cant be doing with all the redecorating! I wonder if he will grow out of it or if its solely because i have left him
My dog chewed a hole in the kitchen wall which was fun. Cages are brilliant and solved our problem. As soon as she sees me in my work clothes she goes in quite happily. I would investigate further they aren't a cruel method.
The other thing i'd try is to tire you dog (hard with a terrier know) before you leave it? My mutt gets a good 45 mins every morning eating horse **** and galloping about a sand paddock before we leave for work.
A muzzle is a definite no no - he could get caught up while you are not there and hurt himself.
If you don't like the idea of a cage (whyever not?) try a high sided puppy play pen, and give him lots of things to play with and chew on while you are out. However, he will probably sleep most of the time if you leave him in a cage.
It doesn't have to be a small one, you can get a decent size one from Argos and put his bed in it and all his 'luggage'. He will probably use it to sleep in during the day while you are there as well.
Ive tried him in a cage he hates it, he tends to bark a lot anyway which worsens when hes in the cage, ive been reported for his barking already so keen not to do this. Some people eh? if i cant find a way of stopping the chewing the cage will have to be the way to go i think, thanks for your replies though
We make every trip into the cage a pleasant one. Going in there and having the door shut on her means shes getting a treat. She has never been sent to it for punishment. It may be worth trying to reeducate your dog into the joys of a cage or crate.
Dont know why i never thought of giving him a treat while he was in there, i dont put him in as punishment as i think thats a bit cruel really, i think i might try it over the course of a week first see how he gets on
