I get tonsilitis a lot and have this very problem often. I find sipping really icy drinks helps it alot, it certainly imroves my hearing.

Also, lying down with the bad ear facing up seems to help it drain. My mum (lol) helps me out by rubbing behind my ear whilst pulling the bad ear. Sounds mad but I think it helps clear it.
