Hi Folks Today Barney my Springer Spaniel registered with our local vet as a blood donor, I am very proud of him! Apparently for a dogs first blood transfusion the blood does not need to be type specific but if it is unlucky enough to need a second transfusion it has to be the same blood group. So hopefully Barney will be able to help one of his canine cousins that is less fortunate than himself. Next time you have your dog at the vet why not ask about becoming a donor?
Well done you and Barney. I would add though that they usually require medium to large dogs, short coated is better and calm natured (Springer??). Greyhounds are ideal and so are most Labs.
I think that the timing was a fluke - I have consumed many custard creams since then without problem.
One of the papers today has an article about doggy blood donors being wanted. I think that it is a great scheme. There is no harm to the donor (in this case Barney) and it can save a life.
