Hi sarumite ..I have those answers , but not all that happy with them.
Saw in the sense of adage.
Not cut out =unsuited .
Pate =head around 'red' for Predate

Thanks slaney .. I missed the pate/head on 22d so that ties up that one.

On 30a I saw the "not cut out" connection, but thought there might also be an anagram somewhere in clue?
