Backfilling, water utility, Grab wagon advice
4 Answers
I'm about to start a new job with no experience. I've lied to get my foot in the door because no one will hire me with no experience. I need all the help I can get. I'm going to be driving a grab wagon (with bucket and tipper) for a water utility company. I know the basic stuff about using the HIAB (I'm legal to use and drive it). I just need to know about backfilling holes side of things.
I've been told I'll need to get sections and build up around service valves, fire hydrants, wash out valves and stop taps. I'll need different sections for each. How do I tell the difference between them? How do I and what a the correct ways to build these sections up and backfill?
I'll cover the pipe with pea gravel right, to 300mm from the top of the pipe, hand compacting it. Then I'll cover it with stone compacting that at 150mm incraments with a wacker. Then leave 100mm and 80mm for road and pavement tarmacing?
Can anyone give me some detailed information on this job or direct me somewhere I can find out how to do things.
Thank you.

You've just got to make sure you have the right cover (FH Fire Hydrant, WO Washout etc). You'll find you wont compact the pea gravel much, so just tamp it down as best you can. The bit to get right is compacting the type 1 in 150mm layers. Beware if there is any water about. Using a wacker to excess in wet conditions will just make the stone go soggy and you will be back to dig it out again in a few weeks. This type 1 is what 'gives' if its not done right and leads to a pothole around a valve. I take it someone else is doing the tarmac.
