Does anyone know how to activate alerts when there is a new message in your inbox? I have ticked the check box in tools>options>general>play sound when new messages arrive and a little envelope is suppose to pop up at the bottom of the screen as well but nothing happens. I have rebooted my pc but still nothing happens

I've never had a problem, nor seen any option to set it.

Do you have double chevrons (<<) showing bottom right, in the notification area? Click on it to show hidden - or switch off Task Bar - Properties - "Hide inactive icons".
