Can anyone tell me what are the colour of the flowers of the blackcurrant bush? My Mother-in-Law has a bush in her garden that she claims is blackcurrant, the bush is about 6 ft tall, and has pink flowers hanging in clusters from it. Now I thought they were the same yellow/white colour that my redcurrants are.
Am I mistaken, or is it just that my Mother-in-Law is trying to get rid of me!!!
I think 6ft tall for a blackcurrant isn't right, it maybe a flowering currant try Google image search and put in flowering currant or Ribes and see what you think.
rub a piece of bark away with your finger and smell it. It will smell of blackcurrant. Although ornamental varieties will also smell of blackcurrant it will tell you if it is a Ribes.
Thank you for suggesting the Google of Ribes, I have found the plant, Ribes sanguineum Pulborough Scarlet is the exact plant, but nowhere that I have looked so far indicates if it is edible or poison. I do so want to get my facts right, before opening my mouth, into which I could place my size 5's.
That is an ornamental variety grown for its flowers and not for the fruit. Although not poisonous it is not classed as an edible and will not taste very nice.
