control indicator the one looks like an engine,has lit up it does not flash,what causes it , could i fix with out taking it to a garage.it is on a astra mark 4.car running on emergency programme.have i done any damage by running it.

You can only get the light put out with a diagnostic machine, so a visit to a mechanic is the only real way.
Without the diagnostic you will not be able to tell if continuing to drive with the light on is doing any more damage. For example if the light is indicating something is putting too much fuel through the exhaust, prolonged driving may damage your catalytic converter.
As furry says - take it to a garage with proper diagnostic equipment - they will be able to read the fault code and tell you whats wrong - most likely a faulty sensor.
