Why do some long distance runners spit alot whilst running? Have noticed this on the television cross-country races of both the men and women's races.Just curious.

when you are concentraing on breathing and holding a rythmn a build up of "spit and stuff " in your mouth is the last thing you want to swallow and every now and then a good "blow out " is a bit of a kick up the ass to keep focused.

When you run it clearly makes the lungs produce phlegm as the last person pointed out. It's not spit in the saliva sense so rather than swallow it you really need to spit it out, and those tight shorts leave little room for hankys. And they are usually too busy to stop and use one.
