Who said this? I believe it was a man who made a gesture for a back-hand tip whilst he was saying it.

The fool in 'The lioness and her Knight' by Gerald Morris.
I remember an awful TV 'comedy' series, (on a par with 'On the Buses'), where Windsor Davies would half turn away, stick out a hand palm upwards behind him, cough politely, and say 'I'll be leaving you now,Sir'. I cannot remember the name of the show, and, strangely, can't find it listed in his biography. I think it was something to do with running a hotel.
Windsor Davies played the sergeant-major in 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum', and made several recordings with Don Estelle, including the hit, 'Whispering Grass'

That's the one, Allen! Your memory is better than mine! It was Alfie Bass with Bill Frazer, not Windsor Davies, in the lead roles.
