buying and renting a house?

We are in the process of buying and selling, our chain fell apart below us and we are trying to resell, we only have until the weekend before our dream home is put up for sale again! We were two days from exchange when all this happened, The property was being rented out before we bought and so is pretty cheap as it has not been well maintained, but really it just needs a lick of paint. We are thinking of offering to rent the property which is vacant at present until completion, in order to kind of keep hold of it! I was just wondering is this legal, and does anybody have any advice
