Killing conifer roots

I need to kill the roots of one large conifer and one large escalonia bush to stop them growing up through cement footings. Any suggestions on how I can do it?

I have the same problem but they aren't my trees they are my neighbors. I was told at the weekend to bang copper nails into the roots but this may kill the whole tree off.
