bmw approved tyres

I was informed recently that if you change a tyre on a bmw car, you should make sure that the tyre has a "star" along with all the other information, ie. sizes etc that are written on the side of the tyre.
This, apparantly, means that it is approved by bmw for use on their cars.( but not leagally binding ).
Anyone else heard of this ?
