how and when is the best way and time to do pruning...i haven't touched mine since i planted it 4 years ago except to cut the dead blooms off after they die. it's getting too big and i didn't get many blooms this year. i live in northern virginia. thanks

To completly rejuvenate them cut all the stems back to nearly ground level. In view of your fairly hard winters I'd wait till the spring

I always do mine in early spring and cut them back quite hard. They've survived so far and I get a good crop of flowers every year
