Tranfers from New York

Anyone know of a good firm to get me from Newark airport to Lexington Ave and how much i can expect to pay?

Last time I was at Newark I got the train, to the centre of NY. When you come out the airport, the train station is right in front of you, and the train goes straight into the centre of town. I think that I got off at Times Square. It took about an hour.

Penn Station at 34th and 7.

Quite handy and cheap, but not if you have a lot of luggage. A cab is still quicker.

Then again, still quicker to fly to JFK for Manhattan, than Newark...

Go to the transportation centre in the airport, they will arrange you a shared taxi or bus transfer. I think we paid $12 each to the port authority.

Whatever you do don't get a yellow cab from outside the airport, they are notorious as rip off merchants!

Don't the taxis from EWR have a fixed rate into Manhatten like they do from JFK??? This site says 50$ plus tip [think 20% otherwise they get stroppy!]

Not sure about EWR, but I'm sure you're right. It is $45+toll ($4)+tip (20%) from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan.

Official taxis are not rip-off merchants at all. But if you take a gypsy cab from someone touting for business outside the airport, well that is quite another matter!

The yellow taxis outside Newark airport are the ones that are the rip-off merchants. They quote you a price and when you arrive at your destination they ask you for money.

We were strongly advised by a number of different people not to use them

The GoNYC says it is metered fare from EWR to Manhattan, $45-$55. Then on top you add the toll for the tunnel, plus antytip (say 20%).

If a taxi driver tried to get you to pay more than that you refuse. If they persist you take their badge number and report them. The fare details, and number to report them are labelled prominantly at several points in the back of legitimate (licensed) taxis; the kind that you would get from the official taxi rank.

If you have any questions at the airport itself. you can ask for advice from the official despatcher at the taxi rank. They often also give you a slip of paper explaining the fare details, and your taxi badge id, AND ask where you are going and tell you what your fare will be.

I think it would be pretty hard to get ripped off in a licensed city cab these days.

As I said above, we got the shared taxi which cost us about $13, much cheaper than the taxis lined up outside!

I'm not going to argue about whether or not they are rip-off merchants, I was just passing on the advice we were given by several different sources (including travellers themselves, and websites).

If anyone feels more comfortable using them than the cheaper method I used (suggested above) then that's their decision.
