I was interested in starting to trade stocks and shares, but not fully aware of what exactly that means or entails and would like some more information and places I would start this with.

Start with londonstockexchange.com. If you register for free there is an educational set of links which will teach you about how the market works and how to trade. Follow the Golden Rules for successful investing though: Never invest more than you can afford to lose, Buy low Sell High and this means that you sell High and use the money for another low - cheap investment, have a plan and stick to it regardless of what markets do. Do not borrow money to invest! I have traded for 15 years without ever making a loss even in market downturns. A good tip at the moment are mining stocks but tread carefully. Good luck!
