Haircut problems

I have a 2 year-old son and he desperately needs a haircut but I'm having problems getting him to have it done. Has anyone got any suggestions on how I can get him to have his haircut without the all drama?

what doesnt he like? Are they using hair trimmers, some babies dont like the noise.
If youre trying to get a neat cut and the hairdresser is holding his head still then perhaps he doesnt like that.
My son is OK when having his hair cut, we always use the same woman and she is very patient and good with him. he will have his dummy for comfort if he needs it and maybe a snack or a book to occupy him too. he sits on my lap and as long as hes not held too firmly will sit for long enough, occasionally taking a few seconds break to look around and chat to others in the salon.

i had the same problem..and im sorry to say my son is now 6 and has just started to go to the barbers...this is because his friends have trendy hair cuts and now he wants that too (good old fashioned coppying) but in the past we did use bribery quite alot!!
although at 2 perhaps he is a bit young... does he have any friends that have haircuts that you could take him along with to see?

You can sometimes get specialist childrens hair dressers. They have chairs like quad bikes or horses and have a tv screen in front of each child. The child gets to choose a dvd or video to watch while getting their hair cut! If this is not an option in your area, when our boys were small, we had them sit on our knees and we wore the cape and let them just wear old clothes and get covered in hair - it was the cape that they didn't like. You might want to try a hand held game or something for him to concentrate on while the cut is going on. Alternatively, you could let him grow his hair into a trendy long hairstyle!

When my daughter first had her hair cut, the hairdresser let her play in the basins with some water and rollers, etc. It took her mind off her hair long enough to have it cut - maybe you could ask salons if they'd mind doing this?

Have you tried either doing it at home yourself or having a hair dresser come to your home. Familiar surroundings could help. My daughter was born with loads of hair and has been having it cut since about 6 weeks old and at 2 she decided not to have it done. We resorted to major bribary with all sorts of sweets etc which i would normally have avoided like the plague. She got over it in the end and is fine now. Persevere. Good luck

You could just put up with longer hair - I know a boy who flatly refused to have his hair cut until he was 12, used to go to school with ringlets to his shoulders! In a way, I think it was character forming, he got more stick about having short hair than he had when it was long!

Or you could just snip off the longest bits while he's asleep.

Hi... with all of my children I have had a mobile hairdresser come to the house for the first few times to get them used to it. Child in highchair ,with fave programme on tv, washable toys on the tray, and me not making any fuss ,then let them use the hoover hose to suck up all the hair thats been chopped off !! It's worked for me , but I know that not all kids respond the same ...... worth a try though ! x

Find out what their favourite TV or film or comic character is and then say you're gonna get it cut like they have it. Good luck if their TV hero is Phil Mitchell ;o)
