Faulty glow plug?

A light comes on the dash meaning a fault in the engine. Goes off after about a mile when car starts to warm up Is it a dodgy glow plug and if left for a while will it damage car? The car is starting ok at the moment. Vauxhall Astra DTI.

on some modern cars eg vag group/ mercedes benz commercials this is a fault light for the engine and not necesserally indicting a fault with the heater plugs.
