I think so, yes.

If you look up the second word, that phrase is mentioned.

thanks JD. My 1990 7th ed Chambers only mentions the first phrase of the clue. I can't find any reference to a link with horses grouped for exercise anywhere! Any idea where I can look for proof? I've tried googling but get nowhere.

Hi GG,

My 2003 Chambers has the second part of the clue under the second word of the answer...........the whole phrase is the first part of the clue.

Can't think where else you could look I'm afraid, I'm surprised that our Chambers vary so much.

guess I need a new Chambers.

Thanks JD
I'm just surprised that the answer contains a word that is in the clue. Surely the clue could have begun 'Entire number'?

I agree with you. Most of their clues are 'tight' and don't leave room for doubt when you solve them. But in the absence of anything better that's what I've plumped for.

Anyway, this grumpygeezer is just off on his holidays for 4 weeks now (aah the benefit of retirement) so the darn quiz has been stuffed into an envelope and posted - no more sleepless nights turning the clues over in my head.
