The clue is 'Intercept and hold spiteful woman and child,'
which of course is Catch. Cat + ch. I don't know why I though the B word or the witch. Not paying enough attention to the clue which couldn't be any clearer.

As you say it's catch. Next time it may be better if you give the full clue if you are asking for an opinion on two answers especially as I don't think all that many ABers would have access to the Everyman crossword and the clues by number.
