Wind Farm Outer Hebrides

I saw a program last week where they were discussing plans to build a massive Wind Farm of 90 metre tall fans on a small Hebridean island. The farm could supply power for a million people. If I recall there were about 250 people living on the island and some were against the proposals because it would effectively ruin the Moors and add considerable noise to nearby residents.
The question is, is it worth damaging vast tracts of unspoilt countryside in the name of green power?

Power stations are always disruptive eyesores lets face it not many of us would want to live next door to one whether it was nuclear, coal fired or a wind farm.

So I'd suggest that the fact that it's "green energy" is actually a bit of a red herring. I doubt they'd say yes to a pressurised water reactor instead!

If you needed the consent of people living next door to site a power station we'd all be living in the dark. So unfortunately these decisions sometimes have to be forced on people.

Maybe the question should really be should the objections of 250 local residents be put in front of the benefits to a million others?

There is another aspect to consider.
When wind blows through a wind farm, surely some of the energy of the wind is dissipated by the turning of the turbines.
SO, if we ring the UK with thousands of wind farms not only do we get power but we would also have a less windy country, win-win I think.
