Hi Pinkfizz Did the doctor say if you will be given a choice of being sedated or just a spray down your throat.?
I would go for the sedated if I ever have one again. However my husband also had the numb spray in the back of the throat and he said he would do it again.
Don't worry about it hurting but it is very uncomfortable. You have to swallow a tube down the back of your throat. It made me very sick while it was being done but as I said some people are fine with it.

She didn't say Brenda. I just keep chocking eating certain things and so she said I need to have an endoscopy and she will let me know when the appointment is. I have googled it and am quite stressed about it now.
pink. everyones experience is different, try not to worry too much.
my husband had one done under sedation and doesn't remember a thing about it. from what i can gather, it's a bit like being hypnotised in that they tell you what to do, and you do it, but don't remember anything about it. his throat was a bit sore for a while afterwards, but that's all. good luck
Oh Pinkfizz please do not worry about it. Like I said before my husband had it done with the spray and he was fine. If you are at all worried then I would say ask to be sedated. love Brenda x
I was absolutely petrified having one done. I had the throat spray and the injection to make me drowsy. I did gag a bit when the tube went down my throat, next thing i was out of it and didn't feel a thing. And i was fine afterwards.
Question Author
So can I come straight home afterwards and would I have to get somebody to get my son from school??
HiPinkfizz if you have just the spray you will just have to wait a short time and then come home but if you are sedated it will take longer and you will need someone to take you home .Brenda x
dear pinkfizz i had an endoscopy it was not too bad ihad a
spray
on the back of the throat as the tube was fed down the throat i could not stop wretching it was very embarrassing it did not hurt .If i had another one i would be sedated you have the option.Everyone was very nice and you are given adrink and toast afterwards you have nothing to worry about.
I have worked in Theatre and seen many endoscopies and to be honest you really would be better having sedation. If possible phone the hospital when you get your appointment the number will be on the letter and ask to speak to someone in the endoscopy unit and tell them your very nervous and please could you have sedation. It is important to have an early appointment to give you time to recover fully.Unless you tell them the procedure will be done without sedation as it is quicker for them with very little recovery time needed. You shouldn't drive for the rest of the day and your throat may be a little sore. You usually get a leaflet with your appointment explaining everything.I would be very surprised if you remember anything afterwards, just look forward to your tea and toast, please don't worry
Hiya PinkFizz,

I had one about 4 weeks ago and was absolutely dreading it! I can honestly say it was nowhere near as bad as i thought it would be. I had the spray and sedation, i remember every little thing about it, the sedation just took my nerves away for me, stopped me from panicking. I wretched a fair bit but they helped me concentrate on my breathing and that eased the wretching. Only when they got as far as my duodenum did the gagging start again but it was almost over by then anyway! It's uncomfortable but in no way painful, so please don't worry.
I had to wait for about 40mins afterwards and once i'd managed a cup of tea and a few biscuits i was allowed to leave, but only if i was accompanied back as i'd had the sedation, even though i felt fine, no drowsiness at any point. I had a slightly sore throat in the evening but it didn't stop me having some dinner.
I just hope they find out what's wrong with you so you can get treatement asap. They were able to tell me so much about what was wrong with me straight away and all i had to wait for were the results from the biopsies. You'll be fine, nervous but fine!
Good luck x
