We've used one for ages and despite living in a high limescale area, our kettle remains immaculate. Alternatively you can get these little metal "scourer" like objects which you pop into your kettle. The best place to buy these is in a hardware store, or Robert Dyas perhaps if you have one near you.
Use white vinegar - two tablespoons per pint. It will take about four hours. To prevent build up in the future, you can put a large glass marble in the kettle. It was the method used when I was small. The limescale goes on the marble instead of the kettle. I don't know the scientific reason why it works - just that it always did on our kettle.
